Advancement Via Individual Determination-AVID (7th and 8th graders)

This is a year long course open to 7th and 8th graders only (all 6th graders will be enrolled in a 9 week Introduction to AVID strategies course). AVID is an internationally recognized program that prepares students for college through a rigorous course of study. Activities include note taking and intensive study skills in all courses; higher level thinking lessons; Writing, Inquiry, Collaboration, Organization and Reading (WICOR) Strategies; and tutoring available only to AVID students. AVID students must meet the following criteria: come from families showing an economic need, in an ethnic minority typically underrepresented in colleges, be in the first generation from their family to attend college, show aptitude for AVID through test scores and other school data, and express a strong desire to attend college and work towards this goal.
