Dress Code Policy

Kohala Middle School Dress Code Policy
(Passed by the KMS School Community Council 04/2006, amended 02/2013, revised 08/2014)
 
In the interest of having a safe, orderly school, which minimizes distractions and maximizes the learning environment; a dress code has been established for Kohala Middle School Students. Students are to dress appropriately reflecting a sense that school is their work.
 
Students will abide by the following dress code:
Type of Clothing Acceptable Unacceptable
Pants & Shorts
Modestly cut pant pants and shorts:
defined as being the length of the fingers with the arms fully extended to one's side.
Bike shorts, spandex, boxer shorts, exposed midriffs and rear ends, intentionally torn or ripped clothing whether purchased in that condition or done personally.
Skirts, Skorts, & Dresses
Modest length
defined as being the length of the fingers with the arms fully extended to one's side.
Exposed midriffs and rear ends, see-through clothing that exposes skin outside the allowable limit for example: midriff, rear end, thigh area outside the modest length zone, and high-cut slits. Intentionally torn or ripped clothing whether purchased in that condition or done personally.
Shirts, Tops & Blouses
Shirts must be worn at all times, shirts and tops must have a strap over both shoulders that are no less than 1 inch in width.
 
See-through or lace tops are acceptable only when lace material is on the arms (see unacceptable).
Tube tops, halter tops, razor back or tarzan tops, exposed midriffs or backs. Excessive cleavage, inappropriate slogans, graphics, logos, pictures or statements, spaghetti straps or straps less than 1 inch in width, see-through tops that show undergarments, midriffs or the back. Intentionally torn or ripped clothing whether purchased in that condition or personally done.
Accessories:
Hats, Sunglasses, Jewelry, etc.
Accessories that do not detract from the learning environment may be worn.
Hats and sunglasses must be removed during class time.
Any accessories that display inappropriate logos, pictures, statements, graphics.
Consequences for not abiding by the dress code:
Warning and students will be asked to change inappropriate attire.
Referral for dress code violation Class D offense, student will be asked to change the inappropriate attire.
Additional dress code violations shall result in referral for insubordination, Class C offense, student will be asked to change the inappropriate attire.
 
Principal will determine the discipline applied as per the violation.
