This past March, Kohala Middle School had fun raising funds for former KMS student Michael Bartolome. Bartolome was diagnosed with leukemia after being accepted to UH Hilo for fall 2016. Students and staff got on board to help Bartolome and family with medical and travel expenses by competing in a penny drive. Students competed against each other by homeroom, raising pennies and dollars to add to their homeroom’s final score and raising silver coins to count against their competitors final scores.
All collection jars were monitored in the office, creating a level playing field, and the homeroom with the highest score received a smoothie party. The penny drive ran just one week--March 13-17, 2017--and the KMS student body raised over $1,200! Mahalo to everyone who participated, and congratulations to Ms. Athan’s 6th grade homeroom who raised more pennies and dollars than silver coins, with a total score of 18,061.If you missed out on this opportunity to give to Michael Bartolome and family, no worries, we are excited to announce that on Saturday May 6,2017 from 10AM-4PM there will be a community fundraiser organized by Kohala High School senior Jaycie Lewis. This event will be held at the Kohala High School gym and field and will include a car show, live music, silent auction, food trucks, as well as other activities.
